Vic O'Connor is the Managing Director of Geotechnics NZ and a Director of Chadwick Geotechnics Australia and the Tonkin + Taylor Group. He has more than 40 years’ experience in civil engineering testing and instrumentation.
Past projects include Tongariro Power Development, Marsden Point Refinery Expansion, Clyde Dam, Golden Cross Mine (tailings embankment), Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel and the recently completed Wellington Inner-City Bypass. All of these projects included a significant amount of geotechnical testing, instrumentation and monitoring.
Vic is responsible for instrumentation and testing aspects of projects such as Auckland’s Waterview Tunnel, Waihi Gold Tailings Dam (Waihi), Memorial Park Alliance (Wellington) and Cambridge Bypass project. All include specialist geotechnical testing/instrumentation, automatic data acquisition and electronic data presentation and reporting.
Vic has worked in the UK, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand and he has worked on - and established laboratories on - numerous major projects including an oil refinery, gold mines, motorway construction, mass concrete dams, tunnels, landfills and hydro-electric projects.
Vic specialises in quality systems, geotechnical and pavement testing, site laboratory project management, geotechnical instrumentation and is an auditor for International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) and a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM).
