John has more than 35 years of professional experience. He has a B.Sc. and a National Diploma, both in civil engineering, is a Chartered Engineer (UK) and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK). He relocated to New Zealand from South Africa in 2007 and joined Tonkin + Taylor in 2012. John has specialised in hydrological studies including:
- Assessment of hydrometeorological data
- Frequency analyses for floods and generating depth-duration-frequency data
- Rainfall-runoff modelling for generating long time series of streamflow data and flood hydrographs
- Modelling to determine yields from storage and also the projected impact of climate change on yields and on run-of-river
- Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) and Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) analyses
- Flood routing to determine peak discharges and water levels (for dam safety evaluations)
- Preparation of hydrological evidence for consent hearings
- Hydropower potential assessments
He has led the hydrological and water resource planning and operation analyses for both large and small projects in New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Asia and Africa. He is an experienced computer programmer having developed flood frequency analysis software and numerous pre and post processors for preparing input data and analysing large results files.
