Dr Tom Shand is a Technical Director at Tonkin + Taylor and a Senior Lecturer in Coastal Engineering the University of Auckland. Tom and his team’s expertise is called upon to develop sustainable solutions for communities, as well as public and private sector clients dealing with issues associated with coastal processes, natural hazards, climate change and local seismicity.
Tom brings the combined attributes of a practical engineering background, academic analysis and a ‘Kiwi can-do’ attitude to resolve your complex coastal and hydraulic problems.
He has been involved with many transformational coastal infrastructure projects undertaken across Aotearoa New Zealand and the South Pacific, including the North Canterbury Infrastructure Rebuilt following the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake, the Chatham Island Port Waitangi upgrade and the 36th America’s Cup Village.
Tom has authored guidance on Coastal Protection Works for Pacific Island Countries and was co-author on the Ministry for the Environment Coastal Hazards and Climate Change guidance.
