QuakeCoRE 2025

QuakeCoRE

QuakeCoRE brings together researchers, economists, iwi, and resilience leaders across Aotearoa and we’re proud to be facilitating two workshops this year. Our Technical Director, Maxim Millen, is co-hosting a cross-industry and academic workshop on automation in engineering design and analysis—bringing together researchers and practitioners to explore quality assurance, risk management, and how to thrive in the age of automation. James Russell, Sector Director – Finance + Insurance, and Virginie Lacrosse, Principal Engineer – Natural Hazards, will also lead a workshop on the National Liquefaction Model. Funded by the Natural Hazards Commission – Toka Tū Ake, this model represents a significant leap forward in planning and delivering seismic resilience.

We look forward to sharing this with the research community, and fellow practitioners at QuakeCoRE.

He Kura Nā Rātā, He Kura Pūkaha

He Kura Nā Rātā, He Kura Pūkaha - Māori in engineering

We’re proud to sponsor this unique wānanga celebrating Māori in engineering – happening 4–5 September 2025 in Tāmaki Makaurau. Across two days, the kaupapa will explore the past, present, and future of Māori in engineering through engaging kōrero, interactive sessions, and inspiring insights from leaders and advocates. Together, we’ll look at how we can create a profession that better reflects and supports Māori talent and knowledge at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland, Faculty of Engineering and Waipapa Marae.

CCBC 2025

CCBC 2025

We’re looking forward to joining the Climate Change + Business Conference 2025 in Auckland from 8–9 September. As Aotearoa’s leading forum on climate and business, this year’s theme — Ambition. Accountability. Action. — couldn’t be more timely. With less than five years to halve emissions and increasing urgency to act for both climate and nature, the conference will spotlight the practical ‘how’ through keynotes, workshops, and case studies from here and abroad.

Our Tonkin + Taylor team — James Hughes, Simon Harvey, and Jon Rix — will be on the ground, connecting with leaders, clients, and peers to help accelerate sustainable solutions.

Be sure to attend our ‘Facing the inevitable’ workshop (1pm on Tues 9th), hosted with Professor Jonathan Boston. We will be exploring some of the really tough adaptation questions around risk, who pays, equity issues etc. Come along and join the conversation.

Ngā mihi to Environmental Defence Society (EDS), Sustainable Business Council NZ, and Climate Leaders Coalition for hosting this vital platform for action.

RMLA 2025

RMLA

Tonkin + Taylor is looking forward to attending the 2025 Resource Management Law Association (RMLA) Conference in Marlborough. This year’s theme, Sound Futures, invites us to explore how integrated responses and collective action can help shape resilient, equitable, and sustainable outcomes for our environment and communities.

We’re proud to have Dr Emma Singh, Senior Natural Hazard and Climate Risk Consultant, contributing to the conversation as part of the panel discussion:

9.20am | Thursday 11 September | Climate Change and Natural Hazards – Reduction and Resilience

Emma brings international experience in catastrophe and climate risk advisory services, with expertise spanning climate and multi-hazard risk assessments, catastrophe loss modelling, and the optimisation of insurable risk. Her insights will help deepen the dialogue around how we respond to the increasing complexity of climate-related challenges.

Joining Emma at the conference are Tonkin + Taylor Senior Planners Mikayla Woods and Keeley Clayton, who are looking forward to engaging with fellow professionals, sharing knowledge, and exploring Marlborough’s unique landscapes and heritage. We’re excited to be part of this important event and the conversations that will help shape our collective future.
