Supporting Toka Tū Ake NHC with Hazard Modelling, Policy-Aligned Advice, and Post-Disaster Engineering Services

The Natural Hazards Commission (Toka Tū Ake NHC) is a New Zealand Crown entity that invests in natural hazard research and education, while also providing natural hazard insurance for residential property owners. Tonkin + Taylor has had a longstanding relationship with the NHC, through its various iterations, dating back to the 1970s.

In conjunction with NHC we provide technical advice for both small scale and major natural hazard events. In the event of a large-scale disaster, such as the 2010-2011 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence or the Severe Weather Events in 2023, Tonkin + Taylor typically takes a lead role to support the engineering response. This involves helping the NHC determine the scale and impact of the event during the response phase and delivering the engineering expertise needed to support the recovery phase.

Partnering with Toka Tū Ake NHC

Tonkin + Taylor also works closely with NHC to support the understanding and management of natural hazard risk across Aotearoa. Our work includes the development of hazard models tailored to New Zealand’s unique landscape, supported by advanced data science and geospatial analytics. We also provide fragility and vulnerability modelling to assess how assets respond to hazard impacts and contribute to applied research that informs sector-wide best practice. This collaboration with NHC ensures our insights are grounded in science, aligned with policy, and responsive to the needs of communities, insurers, and key decision-makers.

Our deep experience working alongside the NHC, private insurers, and loss adjusters across the sector means we’re able to help our clients respond quickly and efficiently. We provide trusted advice grounded in our deep understanding of NHC’s legislative framework, informed by on-the-ground hazard data, and aligned with relevant policy settings.
