The Natural Hazards Commission (Toka Tū Ake NHC) is a New Zealand Crown entity that invests in natural hazard research and education, while also providing natural hazard insurance for residential property owners. Tonkin + Taylor has had a longstanding relationship with the NHC, through its various iterations, dating back to the 1970s.
In conjunction with NHC we provide technical advice for both small scale and major natural hazard events. In the event of a large-scale disaster, such as the 2010-2011 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence or the Severe Weather Events in 2023, Tonkin + Taylor typically takes a lead role to support the engineering response. This involves helping the NHC determine the scale and impact of the event during the response phase and delivering the engineering expertise needed to support the recovery phase.
