The 12th APEC Senior Disaster Management Officials Forum

The 12th APEC Senior Disaster Management Officials Forum recently took place in Kokopo, Papua New Guinea with the theme of “Advancing multi-hazard early warning systems for emergency preparedness and Disaster Risk Management (DRM).

Tonkin + Taylor presented a state-of-the-art multi-hazard impact based early warning system focusing on advanced communication systems to enhance last mile outreach.

T+T recently designed a Tsunami warning communication system for Fiji that was well received by the audience. When asked about the effectiveness of warning systems, T+T’s Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist, Bapon Fakhruddin said that “No single method of warning will reach all and a strategy is needed to integrate and support multiple methods and channels to disseminate. By adopting standards for risk information and dissemination interfaces, warnings systems should be flexible enough to adapt to different information delivery systems. Local authorities need to work together to develop a common public education outreach program to ensure that local residents and businesses understand the procedures associated with warning messages.”
