What do NZ’s engineering graduates really, really want? T+T of course!

The 2018 student pulse survey set out to answer this question: “What do graduates want in an employer?”

The survey also wanted to find out where graduates would work if they had a choice. This year, we’re stoked that Tonkin + Taylor emerged as the winning engineering solution. The only engineering consultants to feature in the top 10, T+T scored a massive hit with students across New Zealand and was placed as the country’s fifth most desirable place to work overall.

Survey respondents highlighted interesting projects, development opportunities and company culture as amongst the most important factors for students when choosing where to apply for a job.  Tonkin + Taylor’s own graduates can certify that all of these are in abundance at T+T!

Water resources engineer Victor Su says his most interesting – and favourite - project to date is the $700m Puhoi to Warkworth Motorway: “I’ve contributed to a huge project that will have a significant impact on the wider public and this has given me a great sense of achievement”.

Omm Prachankhet, a geotechnical engineer, can vouch for Tonkin + Taylor’s great company culture as she gets “a lot of support from everyone here – including very senior staff – they’re always approachable and they really want me to succeed”.

Meanwhile, civil engineer Emma McFarlane says working at Tonkin + Taylor allows her to regularly pursue challenging new development opportunities. “I’m working on something different every day,” says Emma. “All the variety means I never get too comfortable - it can be hard work, but it’s great for my development”.

“You only have to talk to our graduates to hear first-hand how they enjoy being part of T+T. Our graduates are treated as a trusted employee from Day One,” says Tonkin + Taylor’s People and Capability Director, Kavita Khanna.

“We don’t treat our graduates any differently to our experienced consultants - this is incredibly empowering. We make sure there is access to training and professional development, whilst they are learning alongside some of the best minds in the country. It’s for all these reasons that we are one of the favourite employers of graduates.”

With over 1500 responses, this survey - organised by The Talent Solutions and Nxtstep - has proven to be New Zealand’s biggest to date, with 78% of the respondents to the survey being under the age of 25.
