Quake proofed buildings stand ultimate test

Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Peter Millar has been responsible for designing and earthquake proofing the foundations on the majority of the high rise buildings in Auckland’s CBD and many of NZ’s most important buildings.

Two of those, the historic Parliament Buildings and Te Papa in Wellington are both rated as importance level category four, both have foundations with base isolating systems and both were put to the ultimate test during the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck central New Zealand in November 2016.

Peter Millar talks about the work that went into ensuring they both came through that massive earthquake unscathed.
