Career defining opportunity for T+T engineer at Waterview
Mark Foster, Designer Director, Waterview Connection project

A career defining opportunity is the way that Mark Foster describes his new role as Design Director on the Waterview Connection project.

“I feel privileged to be working on a project that is going to have such a positive impact on Auckland as a city and the lives of those who use Auckland roads” says the Tonkin +Taylor civil engineer.

With a value of $NZD 1.4 billion, this is the largest and most ambitious motorway project ever undertaken in New Zealand by the NZ Transport Agency.

“Everything about the project is massive and international scale”

The project will see an alternative major transportation route that circumvents the Auckland motorway network.

With $NZD 180 million worth of work left to deliver over the coming months, Mark has been appointed to see the design of the project through to completion.

“There is still a lot of design work to come, including three new pedestrian bridges and further widening of 2.5 km of motorway – a recent addition to our scope as the Transport Agency looks to capitalise on the strength of the team”

“Our team will be busy supporting the construction team – we have 1000 construction workers on site each day and we work closely with them to check their work lines up with the design and to respond to their queries. With a tight programme it's very important we respond quickly to keep things moving”

“As design director it's my job to make sure that design inputs meet the quality expected by the Alliance and that we deliver to programme.  This goes hand in hand with supporting the team and creating the right environment for them to deliver, have fun and grow as professionals”

Mark has worked on a number of successful projects including Onehunga Foreshore Restoration, Pukeahu National War Memorial Park and the Waitangi Wharf Upgrade in the Chatham Islands.

“Mark has deservedly been selected for this challenging role to complete the project” says Well Connected Alliance (WCA) Board Member Peter Millar.

“His strong alignment with alliance principles, together with his enthusiasm and openness shone through during his interview for the role”

“The project has a long way to go with over 60 designers involved and I am confident that Mark will galvanise his team to deliver a fantastic outcome”
